Collection: Jo Burton

Jo Burton is a self-taught artist living in Kent.  Predominately painting landscapes, she’s developed a style of light surrealism over time.  Her collection is acrylic using the British countryside as inspiration, capturing the beauty of the natural world. Taking photographs on her walks, she translates what she sees and feels to her canvas.  Trees and other subjects of nature are the focus of many of her pieces, which capture the transcendental contrast between hardness and softness in nature.  She’s continually exploring her creativity and is thrilled to share her work with others to add joy and inspiration to their lives.

Artists Statement

Having lived around our beautiful countryside all my life, in my art I hope to capture not only what I see but what I feel.  My happy place is truly in front of my easel; transposing emotion and beauty of our surroundings into an impression of feeling on canvas.
From a young age I have been creative, whether it be in the home, garden or with a brush in hand
My style and mediums have changed over time, and for a long time my art was a very personal thing.  But over the last couple of years I have rediscovered my love of painting, and friends and family have encouraged me to share my work more publicly.
Immersing myself in nature and photographing its beauty is the beginning of my creative process.  My work tends to develop a theme across two or three paintings as I endeavour to capture the beauty of that subject in different ways.  The more I immerse myself in the process, the more I realise there are so many themes and emotions to capture in our natural environment and it inspires me to explore the world and beauty around me.
Life tends to sweep us away without a moment to breathe.  Forcing ourselves to just stop, stare and digest our surroundings is important to me and the discovery of the natural world and beauty in everything we see drives my art and is at the core of my portfolio.
As I continue on this journey, my art evolves: sometimes nature, sometimes still life.  Sometimes capturing the warmth and glow of summer, at other times the cool serenity of winter and autumn - forever exploring and pushing myself, daring myself.

My art is a journey emulated in some of my paintings.  Paths leading somewhere, walking through trees, strong and powerful.  There is contrast in style and in texture to the work, and I hope to capture the transcendency of some of my subjects across the collection.
I predominantly use acrylic on canvas. It gives me the flexibility and depth as a medium to explore themes and capture what I see and feel.  I look forward to sharing my work as widely as possible, and to the viewer joining me on my voyage of discovery.
